Living by his words is precisely what the Ga-Segonyana local municipality mayor, Councillor Neo George Masegela, has proven in the past two years. In Kathu Gazette’s first interview as mayor two years ago he said that he loathed potholes. Recently rains poured and the poor drainage system was evidently overwhelmed as water flowed and criss-crossed on the streets more to the detriment of the street surfaces.

Within the two days of strong downpours, potholes the good size to hide a bitch and its puppies were seen around town and traffic was forcibly meandering on straight streets in an attempt to avoid them.  Equally the mayor took cognisance of the problem and dispatched his team around town to ensure potholes were sealed to stabilise the movement of traffic.

Again, when Kathu Gazette met the mayor after the rains, he stood by his words and stated that the municipality should not be giving excuses over potholes challenges. He conceded that the surfaces of the streets have had their time and need to be replaced to stop the random surfacing of potholes during rains.

“It is within our desire as a municipality to ensure that roads give the first impression to our people and visitors alike to substantiate our investment and tourism advocacy. Roads alone can tell a story about the state of our cities and towns hence the need to prioritise them. We greatly welcome willing partners that can bring resources towards completely re-tarring these streets to bring lasting solution to the continuous mending of the damaged spots on them”.

Various municipal teams were scattered around town in trying to contain the dire need to reduce potholes in the central business district”.
