Mayor’s house bruised by fire

There was a near disaster at the mayor’s residence on December 02, 2020 at around 22:30.

Hooligans attempted to petrol-bomb the house of Ga-Segonyana local municipality mayor, councillor Neo George Masegela, but managed to only shatter the panes of the entrance door.

In an interview with the mayor, he said that they had gone out as a family for dinner. It was on their return that they found that the house was looking strange, only to discover that there was some extensive damage.

“This was an act of both anarchy combined with hooliganism. I have an open policy. Those who feel aggrieved about me, must come to me directly and deliberate issues. This was not a constructive way of resolving issues. I take this as a personal attack on my family and I for no apparent reason that I know of. All I am saying, is let the police take the necessary steps and apprehend the culprits,” the mayor reverberated.

This incident occurred at a time when there is serious lobbying taking place within the African National Congress for the regional elections. Suspicions are high that this could be the reason why the mayor, who doubles as the regional chairperson of the party and who is seeking re-election, was being targeted. Those opposed to his desire to retain the position could have been the perpetrators.

A day before the incident, there was some commotion at Thabo Moorosi multi-purpose centre where the subregion held a preparatory meeting.

Dissimilar political inclinations and views should not be personalised to endanger individuals and families. They are acts of cowardice and jitteriness. The burning of properties is not the correct way to address issues.

The continuing factional battles are still far from over in the region and this makes the campaign venues red zones.
