Provincial government visits disaster areas

Victor Mulangisi

Two government officials descended on the disaster cramped region of John Taolo Gaetsewe on January 22, 2021. Members of the executive committee (MECs) Mr Bentley Vass and Fufe Makatong visited the region to assess the extent of the damage caused by the heavy rains recorded in the past.

First, they met the Ga-Segonyana and Joe Morolong municipal authorities, councilors mayors and municipal managers, for a briefing on the developments at Ga-Segonyana Council Chamber. This was a swift response to the clarion call raised by the region where different houses in the region are submerged in water due to heavy rains that poured. MEC Fufe Makatong of Roads and Public Works and Roads said that their visit was to get handy information and visit areas affected so that the provincial government can determine what sort of assistance could be rendered to the affected communities.

She was very bold that intervention involving different stakeholders will certainly be the option to ensure people’s dignity is restored. There are floods in the residential yards and surroundings and, as such, water-borne diseases could lead to yet another disaster.

The COGHSTA MEC Vass also weighed in the state of disaster that has hit the district and the supply of electricity, yet another area that keeps floating in the region. Mr Vass said this was a collective provincial decision to come and assess and give the region a specter of hope to do with service delivery in the area.

He said government is prepared to spend the limited funds for the success of the electrification project in the district. The MEC reiterated the need for cooperation between community members and stakeholders to ensure electrification projects are not thwarted willy-nilly for the benefit of all people in need of electricity.

He said that traditional leaders as key stakeholders must bring the community together to ensure there is a smooth transition from the blackout to the transmission of electricity.
