JTG Youth Summit

The 2020 Youth Summit was hosted and organised by the DodoGroup in partnership with the John Taolo Gaetsewe district municipality, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, the South African Diamond and Precious Metals Regulator, Mintek, Emang Mining Resources (Pty) Ltd and JEPA Resources Trading Enterprise (Pty) Ltd from 19 to 20 November 2020 at Kalahari Country Club Kathu, Northern Cape. 

The two-day summit was carried out under the theme “The new normal, opportunities in mining.” The summit aimed to showcase opportunities in the mining and energy sector. It also addressed issues pertaining to job creation, unemployment and skills development amongst the youth, and bridging the gap between local schools, universities and colleges, also about mine workers and the global mineral trade. in the municipality.

The summit was attended by mining representatives, stakeholders, the Northern Cape provincial government, tertiary institutions, youth organisations and junior miners, contractors.

The 2020 Youth Summit Career Expo is an initiative where employers, community partners and professionals meet with prospective job seekers, interns and volunteers. Company representatives usually have tables or booths where résumés can be collected, questions can be answered, and business cards can be exchanged.

The expo event gives students and employers a chance to meet one another, establish professional relationships, and discuss potential job and/or internship and developmental opportunities.

Each donor presented a brief overview of their services.

The official opening of the youth summit was presented by the Executive Mayor of the John Taolo Gaetsewe district municipality Councillor Sophia Mosikatsi.

Mintek Mining works with industry and other R & amp;D organisations to research, develop, and implement new and improved technologies in the minerals and metallurgical sectors. Mintek employs a highly qualified and motivated workforce with a wide range of skills, including metallurgical, chemical, and electronics engineers, chemists, physicists, and mineralogists. Many of their engineers and scientists are recognised as leaders in their fields of specialisation.

Johannes Molaolwa Transformation Officer at the South African Diamond and Precious Metals Regulator (SADPMR) explained about what the SADPMR is and that it is a state owned entity which was established in 2007 in terms of the Diamond Act (Act No.56 of 1986). The mandate of SADPMR is to regulates the industry of diamond and precious metals which include gold and the platinum group metals (PGMs). The SADPMR has a key role on promoting beneficiation within the diamond and precious metals sector.

To promote diamond and precious metals sector, the SADPMR have one of its own branches which is called Diamond Trade which facilitates rough diamond tenders whereby all South African citizen who have diamond permits and or licenses may have an opportunity to buy diamond and export them if they so wish.

The facilitation of diamond tenders and exports and imports are conducted through the Diamond Exchange and Export Centre (DEEC). It is the only gate in South Africa where verification of diamond imports and export are conducted.

Mr Philip Tshiloane General Manager from Emang Manganese explained that Emang Mmogo Mining Resources brings together Black women from diverse backgrounds countrywide into a sustainable business venture.

It was established in 2008 in response to the National Government’s call to create conditions for the development of Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment opportunities in the mining and infrastructure sectors of the economy.

This base metal mining unit of Emang Mmogo has well qualified, experienced and equipped personnel we can draw on and can implement successfully on the specific project to ensure a bright future for woman in mining.

One of the critical parts of the diamond trade function is to ensure fair diamond market value of the diamonds, as such the SADPMR has established a Government Diamond Valuator which its mandate is to make sure that all diamond within South African are traded at a fair market value for the buyers and sellers.

South African Diamond and Precious Metals Regulator issues licenses and permits to deal with diamonds and Precious Metals. SADPMR issued diamond licenses and permits such as Diamond Dealers license which allows a permit holder to buy, sell and export rough diamonds. The Diamond Beneficiation license allows clients to polish and cut rough diamond. SADPMR also issues precious metals permit and licenses such as Precious Metal Beneficiation which allows clients to fabrication of precious metals products other than jewellery and define as beneficiation according to the Precious Metals Act, (Act No. 37 of 2005).

We will be aggressive in our approach but without sacrificing our integrity. Where opportunity exists to source Mineral Rights or go into partnerships with interested parties we will do so. Provide Consulting services to small role players in the industry, if projects are too big for such role players go into partnership with them.

On 20 November 2020 Honorable Minister Samson Gwede Mantashe make his presents at the 2020 Youth Summit with his DMRE delegation under the theme for small business in the mining sector and global mineral-trade. Creating a platform to engage with various stakeholders from government departments, organisations, NGO’s and private owned entities within the upcoming opportunities in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

At midday the Mining Industry presentation facilitator Mr Ndlelenhle Zindela DMRE Regional Manager of the Northern Cape Region gave mining companies an opportunity to present an overview on the SLP programs for the hosting communities. Companies like Assmang Khumani; Back Rock; Beeshoek, Boskop Mining, Kumba Iron Ore, Tshipi Ntle Manganese pledge to make a financial and developmental opportunities investment within the John Taolo  Gaetsewe District.

The Northern Cape MEC for Finance and Economic and Tourism Mr Abraham Vosloo welcomed the Honorable Minister into the Northern Cape.

In Minister Mantashe keynote address he highlighted different aspects about the department has six (6) programmes, developed in line with the objective to develop a mineral resources and energy sector that promotes economic growth and development, social equity and environmental sustainability.

The DMR is probably one of the oldest Government departments in South Africa. Between 1897 and 1898 there were several acts that were administered by the former Registrar of Mining Rights. He also encourages young unemployed people to enrolled at FETs or ABET class because through education we can make the world a better place for development and create opportunities within our own communities.
