Excessive rainfall and floods  (See the video at the end of the article)

Severe discomfort was experienced last week as a result of extreme weather conditions that prevailed when humidity figures soared.

This was, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), due to the tropical storm or cyclone Eloise which first presented over the north eastern parts of Madagascar as of Tuesday 20 January 2021. The weather condition then spread and was downgraded, but still caused severe rain and flooding in the north eastern parts of the country, spreading to the interior, and causing severe rain and flooding in the villages of the JTG, as was reported by the Kathu Gazette last week.

Intermittent rain showers had been received regularly in Kathu and surrounding areas, but since Tuesday 26 January 2021, the rain started at approximately 09:00 and continued right through the night and the next day when the Kathu Gazette went to press.

Rainfall exceeding 100 mm was measured in Kathu and reports of flooding and damage to houses and household goods were received.

The SAWS issued a level 4 impact-based warning for disruptive rain for the region, cautioning against flash floods in lower-lying areas, roads and informal settlements. Disruption to essential services could also be expected. Difficult driving conditions, reduced visibility, pooling on roads, especially on dirt roads and roads with poor surfaces. Also increased potholes. Crops could also suffer severe damage.

The SAWS warned that these rains could continue for three to four days intermittently.
