Showing love throughout the pandemic

Roses are red, violets are blue, and we are in the month of love…

Love should be celebrated all year round by doing the things we love with the people we love. If more than anything this pandemic has taught us not to take the people, we love for granted, you do not know when it could be the last time you speak or see your loved one. Unfortunately, life has become a bit different from what we are used to due to Corona and the restrictions that come with it. However, we should not allow Covid-19 to discourage us from expressing love and gratitude towards our loved ones, and Valentine’s Day is one of those days we can do more than we usually do.

Love brings unity and as Famsa we encourage families to remain united and connected especially during this difficult time. Bear in mind that you do not have to spend a lot of money to express how you feel towards your loved one. Remember it is the thought that counts. It is important to identify your loved one’s love language because it is easier to impress them and you will not have to spend time trying to figure out what you can do to make them feel appreciated.

According to Gary Chapman there are 5 love languages:  1) Words of affirmation – expressing your gratitude using positive words such as, “I appreciate you for cooking dinner”, words of encouragement e.g., “you are beautiful/handsome”. 2) Quality time – Spend time with your loved one by giving them undivided attention, maintain eye contact, listen and be responsive to the activity. 3) Receiving gifts – A gift is something that can be used as a reminder of the person who gave it to you. 4) Acts of service – Help your partner with a task without expecting anything in return. 5) Physical touch – Express love by showing positive physical contact towards your loved one such as a hug, a kiss or even a high five.

Here are some love language tips you can practice with your loved one: a) Give your loved one a body massage. b) Help with the chores. c) Write a love letter. d) Prepare a romantic dinner. e) Make a homemade card. f) Go camping in your backyard. g) Enjoy a romantic breakfast in bed. h) Watch a Valentine’s Day movie.

If your relationship hits a rough patch, or you are feeling overwhelmed by emotions, Valentine’s Day or not… don’t wait too long to get help.  Famsa offers professional help. Most counselling simply involves a few sessions to get the communication flowing again.
