Assmang Khumani mine has released a statement regarding false rumours doing the rounds via whatsapp messages, to the effect that Khumani mine has offered to pay the debt owed by Gamagara local municipality to Sedibeng Water.

On behalf of the management of Assmang Khumani mine, the Senior General Manager, Mark Oosthuizen, stated that the rumours were not true.

Mr Oosthuizen explained that Khumani mine was in no position to intervene in the matter between Gamagara and Sedibeng Water. He added that water issues being experienced in both Kathu and Olifantshoek must be taken up and addressed directly with Gamagara and Sedibeng Water.

Mr Oosthuizen confirmed that Khumani mine is, however, aware of the water shortage crisis in Olifantshoek and has been approached by Gamagara to join in consultations to investigate solutions, together with other stakeholders. These consultations do not include the settlement of Gamagara’s debt to Sedibeng Water though.
