The SAPS Kathu is investigating a case of arson following an alleged fire that damaged the doors of the AGS church in Kathu.

Colonel Mashay Gamieldien, the Section Head of the Media Centre of the SAPS Corporate Communication in Kimberley, said that, according to reports, it is believed that the incident occurred during the early hours of Monday 21 January 2019 in Kathu.

It is alleged that the 48-year-old suspect, who handed himself over to the police on the same day, set the doors alight with an unknown substance.

The damages to the doors are estimated at R10 000.

The suspect appeared in the Kathu Magistrates court on a charge of arson.

Police investigations are continuing.
