A memorial lecture in honour of Nelson Mandela was held on July 16, 2017 at Grand Oasis Casino in Kuruman. The colourful event was graced by regional leaders with the speaker of the provincial legislature, Mr Kenny Mmoiemang as keynote presenter of the lecture.  All mayors in the region were represented including sector departments.

In his lecture, Mr Mmoiemang highlighted all the good works that the former and late statesman did for the country and what he still yearned to see happening to his people and the world as a whole. Based on his centenary celebrations Mr Mmoiemang described the struggle icon as a selfless hero whose humane ideals are yet to be matched in the history of South Africa.

“As we celebrate the 100 years of Mr Nelson Mandela tonight we need to reflect on his personality and then challenge ourselves as to how far we can continue doing the admirable work in the spirit that this man had to humankind.  His political wisdom as a politician cuts across all classes of human race because he knew well that the rich and the poor, blacks and whites, able bodied or not self realisation and emancipation remain key components of human dignity.

As a result, such good works demonstrated before us all must be replicated by broadening his vision to our people. We must render services to our people in honour of this great giant. His love for the people goes far beyond the South African because he carried world liberation credentials”.

The lecture was further flavoured by the presence of the elderly people from the entire region that received blankets and was treated with delicious supper courtesy of the department of agriculture and social development, the host Oasis Casino and the John Taolo Gaetsewe Developmental Trust. The executive mayor, councillor Sofia Mosikatsi, Joe Morolong mayor councillor, Gamagara mayor councillor Nelson Hantise expressed their appreciation to the funders of the gala dinner, memorial lecture and the gifts for the elderly.
