A 22-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man were arrested and charged with hijacking following the hijacking of a vehicle in the early hours of Saturday 12 January 2019, reported Captain Olebogeng Tawana from the SAPS Northern Cape corporate communications office in Kimberley.

The owner of a white VW Polo hatch back alleged that on Saturday 12 January 2019 at about 04:00, he gave two males and a female a lift from Kuruman CBD to Seoding village. While they were driving in the direction of Seoding village, the female suspect asked the driver to stop as she wanted to urinate. The male suspects also got out of the vehicle after the driver had stopped. They attacked the driver and sped off with his vehicle.

The vehicle was later, at about 09:00, found abandoned in Batlharos village, Nanana section. The arrest of both 22-year-old woman and the 19-year-old man was effected after the Trio Task Team followed the leads which linked the duo with the carjacking. They were arrested in Seoding village.
Both suspects are facing charges of car hijacking and they appeared before the Mothibistad Magistrate’s Court on Monday 15 January 2019.

In a separate incident, the John Taolo Gaetsewe Cluster Trio Task Team pounced on two male suspects when a vehicle was reported to have been hijacked on Saturday 12 January 2019 in Taung. The Trio Task Team received information regarding the possible attempted robbery in Maruping village. As they responded promptly to the call, they were led to the tuckshop which the suspects had attempted to rob at gunpoint. During an interview with the tuckshop owner, he indicated to the police that the suspects had arrived at his tuckshop and had demanded at gunpoint that he must open the shop.
The suspects fled the scene after realising that their endeavours to perform a robbery did not succeed. They were seen getting into a getaway vehicle as they drove into the bushes. The police found them busy washing the vehicle near a windmill water pump and they immediately ran into the veld on foot. They were arrested shortly thereafter when the police chased after them.
Two unlicensed fire arms – a .22 magnum and a 7.65 mm pistol, including 39 rounds of ammunition- were found inside the vehicle.

Upon investigation it was found that the very same vehicle had been reported hijacked in Taung the day before. The driver had been shot and his partner had been raped by the alleged hijackers.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Risimati Shivuri commended his members for jobs well done – having arrested the suspects in both cases.
