The Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling on the MEC for COGHSTA, Bentley Vass, to urgently intervene in the debt payment of Gamagara local municipality.

According to Andrew Louw, the DA Northern Cape Premier Candidate, this comes after a portion of Kathu has been left with no water for almost a week as a result of this municipality’s failure to settle its debt of R14-million with Sedibeng Water.

Officials at this municipality told community members that the Vaal dam levels are low, while Sedibeng reports that dam levels are “okay”.

Community members cannot pay for the municipality’s inability to settle its outstanding debt with one of its main service providers. Mr Vass needs to urgently intervene to ensure that the debt is settled and that the community has water.
