
On 30 November 2018 Sishen mine hosted its annual wellness day event.
The event has grown to be a sustainable initiative since its inception in December 2017, with its main purpose being to raise awareness and encourage employees and the community to live well and take contro” of their own health, safety and wellness.
The mine welcomed the community of Kathu, Siyathemba, Mapoteng and Deben to join employees and service providers to participate in the wellness event by offering free transport from those areas to the mine.
The event had the Sishen Safety, Hygiene, Environmental and Land Management departments and Occupational Health Centre, South African Police Service, Department of Social Development, Department of Health, SASSA, Lenmed hospital, CANSA, FAMSA, UGM clinic, Back to Basics, Tsantsabane Alcohol and Drug Service, Parkrun Kathu, ICAS, Love Life, medical schemes Discovery, Bonitas, Umvuzo Health and Avoir, contribute to support a cause where employees and communities learn about healthy living. The South African Blood Service managed to fill 33 units of blood from the 44 blood donators who donated blood at the onsite donation station.
The day’s proceedings were opened by Sishen mine’s General Manager, Mapi Mobwano, who stressed the significance that employee wellness has for Sishen and the community. He further advised employees to be the leaders of their own wellness and safety and not to take their health and well-being for granted.
Mr Mobwano addressed the importance of healthy living and encouraged employees and the community to exercise their right to free HIV and Aids testing and counselling.
“The World AIDS Day 2018 theme encourages us all to stand up, get tested and to know our status so that we can take actions to prevent the spread of the disease,” he emphasised. Many speakers were lined up for the day, including the Gamagara local municipality’s Mayor Edwin Hantise, who encouraged the people to live well and to know their status.
Sishen mine handed out numerous prizes on the day, in reward to spot questions on meaningful information they had received at the event. Stakeholders handed out freebies and information at their wellness stalls. Lucky winners received prizes such as a fridge, microwave and kettle braai in a grand lucky draw towards the end of the event.
The entertainment for the day was symbolic of the fun that one can have while living healthy, with many local artists performing to the amazement of those taking part in the fun walk. Some of Sishen mine’s employees even took to the stage to showcase their unsung singing and dancing talents.
