Due to the expansion of the municipal operations and an influx of people to Postmasburg, the existing waste disposal area was in dire need of upgrade and maintenance.
A lack of funding for key equipment required though, had created huge environmental and health risks.
Kumba Iron Ore’s Kolomela mine’s objective is to support municipal infrastructure development projects, and the municipality with their service delivery initiatives. The mine thus decided – in consultation with the municipal management – to contribute a yellow fleet of 3 vehicles to the municipality to manage the waste in the area.
The handover took place during an engagement session with Kolomela mine and the Tsantsabane local municipality on the municipal showgrounds.
“The contribution of the yellow fleet will have a huge impact on municipal support to improve the operations and maintenance at the landfill site which will also provide adequate service delivery to the community,” says George Benjamin Public Affairs Manager at Kolomela mine
Kolomela mine spent R4,6-million on the fleet to guarantee better management of domestic waste in Postmasburg.
