Testimony of a drug addict
André Roberts a local musician/rapper from Kathu now staying in Johannesburg and working as a fulltime missionary for AFM El-Shammah Church in Kathu.
He recently came back to Kathu to visit his family and the church. He decided to work on a song titled Fly Home. The song Fly Home mainly speaks of his testimony and victory in Christ Jesus for overcoming the disease known as drug addiction. André Roberts a recovering drug addict now walking in total freedom. All thanks and Glory to the Lord and Saviour.
His mission is to bring under youngsters’ attention the dangers and effects of drugs.
The Kathu Gazette had an interview with André Roberts and he would like to share his story with the community in hope that his testimony will help save lives: “I attended High school Kathu then got expelled because I was very rebellious and later my dad got me into Langeberg high school because of my elder brothers’ good reputation but with my dad’s passing I decided to quit school for good and that’s when I started hanging out with the wrong crowd smoking marijuana and drinking.
My drug addiction started at a young age as young as 13 years old, beginning with marijuana but with my dad’s passing I went onto harder stuff like mandrax to try and suppress the emotions of losing my dad at the age of 16. With no father figure to guide me I looked up to older men especially those who instilled fear in others I later joined gangs and got introduced to tik (crystal methamphetamine) for the first time and everything changed. I became more violent and started robbing people and breaking into houses to maintain my drug abuse with my mother’s passing. At the age of 23 I started to turn my ways around. I got a Job and things seemed better.
My breaking point was at the age of 27 when I thought I had everything under control with a great job engaged soon to be married and then it happened. A new neighbour moved in not knowing he’s a drug dealer we build a friendship. Long story short, I started selling drugs for him and later on started using again my fiancé found out about my drug use and left me. As I got worse, getting fired from my job started stealing from our family house getting kicked out to living on the streets and again resorting to violence. One night remembering the words of a stranger saying I need to come back home for the Lord wants to use me mightily. The next day I went to a close friend from church telling him about my circumstances and that I need help! I would say my breaking point was losing everything I held dear to drugs.
So, I’m returning back to Johannesburg on 6 January 2021 as the Lord has called me to servitude at a missionary base in Johannesburg. I’ll also be embarking on my first missionary trip to Kenya Nairobi in the month of April 2021. I am very excited in sharing my testimony and serving others.
The song Fly Home mainly speaks of my testimony and victory in Christ Jesus. I could not have done it without Him. Therefore, I believe everyone has a breaking point that leads to a turning point and the song strongly speaks about that. My prayer is that the message of this song will be like a seed planted in the heart of men.
If any help is needed, especially in trying to understand the patterns of youth when it comes to drug abuse.”
