October month is associated with Breast Cancer awareness and therefore employees from Assmang Khumani’s Bruce and King mines are donning bright pink to demonstrate their support for employee wellness and women in mining, with a special focus on breast cancer awareness.

The top five cancers affecting women in South Africa are breast, cervical, colorectal, uterine and lung cancer.

The top five cancers affecting men are prostate, colorectal, Kaposi sarcoma (a type of skin cancer), lung and bladder cancer – receiving focused attention during the month of November (Cansa’s Movember campaign).

Khumani mine is of the opinion that it is important for their employees and the surrounding communities to be empowered with knowledge regarding their health, recognising the warning signs of cancer and thus lowering the risk of cancer due to early detection. Khumani mine also encourages annual medical check-ups and cancer screening for early detection, as symptoms do not always present until the cancer has spread.

It is important to lead a healthy, balanced lifestyle, cutting out lifestyle factors that may negatively impact on the quality of life and increase the risk of cancer.

Khumani urges both men and male cancer survivors to encourage one another to invest in their health by being aware of changes in their bodies, getting screened and adopting a balanced lifestyle, in order to reduce their risk of cancer or the recurrence of cancer.

With this initiative, Khumani mine also aims to attract more women to work in the mining industry. A lot of effort is placed on improving the health and safety of female employees in the mining environment.
